Moths cannot fly straight, at least not around artificial light. They use celestial navigation to control their direction, always keeping their back to the light (i.e. the sun or the moon for millions of years), but human-made light sits too close.
It’s always felt natural to make art about sadness. I don’t think I’m special in that way.
I wanted to challenge myself to make art about joy - especially since it takes me so long to finish each sculpture. This one was a four-month meditation on excitement. The feeling of landing home after a long time away, knowing my parents are waiting outside the airport to pick me up, bouncing into hugs like a moth into lamplight
